Labour Weekend Action

Are you ready? It’s all go this Labour Weekend in Greymouth with two days of motorcycle action. Saturday 21st gets underway with the all-new West Coast 1/4 Mile Timed Sprints event @ The Greymouth Aerodrome, from 9am. FREE for spectators, great viewing from around the Aerodrome, especially from the beach side of the Aerodrome. Please note due to safety requirements only competitors will be allowed onto the Aerodrome grounds.

Last year saw Gary Donaldson, from Nelson on his KTM 1198, clock - 10.42 seconds with a top speed of 212kph from a standing start over the ¼ mile distance. This year times are expected to fall with a duo of visiting New Zealand Drag Racing Association registered bikes. Troy Appleton from Blenheim and Shannon Web from Nelson will ride their specially modified street bikes in an attempt to break all previous records at the Greymouth Aerodrome. Troy has already set an unofficial National record time of 9.52 seconds on his Yamaha R1 in Masterton earlier this year. This was the fastest ¼ mile time ever recorded in New Zealand by a naturally aspirated 1000cc motorcycle. Troy said “unfortunately I was unable to officially claim the record in Masterton, but I will get a chance at Ruapuna in Christchurch on the Sunday of Labour weekend with the Greymouth event a perfect trial run to test the bike”. West Coast ¼ Mile Timed Sprints is set down from 9am – 1pm, Saturday 21st.                        Troy Appleton, from Blenheim, Yamaha R1

Saturday afternoon, from 1pm, Greymouth Motorcycle Street racers attend sign in and tech inspection @ Aratuna Freighters yard corner Arney & Gresson Streets, Greymouth. Tech inspection checks over all motorcycles, racing on the Greymouth street circuit, along with riders safety riding gear. If you want to see the bikes up close and meet the riders, maybe grab a quick selfie? This is the perfect opportunity.

Sunday morning starts very early for a small army of volunteers setting up the street circuit in the downtown. While you grab breakfast the track is checked and re-checked ready for the action to begin. Gates open at 9am, with EFT-POS available at the main gates. For the children we have something special, the Kids Adventure Pack , with the chance to win one of two Pocket Rocket mini bikes. Children 5-14 years old are eligible, but only the first 500 through the gate receive an adventure pack, so be early! Children entry fee $5, Adults $15 with the race-day programme included and a Family Pass, 2 Adults and 2 Children $30.

A variety of delicious food and refreshments are available throughout the day, with cafes, restaurants, bars, food trucks, coffee carts and stands around the circuit. The downtown also offers plenty of covered viewing areas, giving fantastic vantage points around the circuit whatever the weather.

We are all set for a big weekend and look forward to seeing you here in Greymouth, with two spectacular days of motorcycle action. For more information see the website www.greymouthstreetrace.com
